Mozambique is a scenic country in south Eastern Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Eswatini and South Africa to the south and southwest. It is rich in natural resources, biologically and culturally diverse, and has a tropical climate. Mozambique has an extensive coastline fronting the Mozambique Channel, which offers some of Africa’s best natural harbours. Mozambique is one of the few African nations with Portuguese ancestral influence with Angola in Southern Africa. It is also the only nation whose name contains all the vowel sounds. Mozambique is a poor, sparsely populated country with high fertility and mortality rates and a rapidly growing youthful population.

Currency

The Mozambique “Metical” abbreviated as (MZM) is the national currency of the Republic of Mozambique. The currency’s name, the metical, comes from the Arabic word mithqal, a unit of weight and an alternative name for the gold dinar coin that saw used throughout of Africa until the nineteenth. The Metical currency was introduced on 16th June 1980 to replace the colonial currency “Escudo de Mocambique” and since then the currency has undergone several transformation.

Language

Between the 7th and 11th centuries, a series of Swahili port towns developed in the area, Swahili culture and dialect influence contributed to the development distincts. In the late medieval period, these towns were frequented by traders from Somalia, Ethiopia, Egypt, Arabia, Persia, and India. The voyage of Vasco da Gama in 1498 marked the arrival of the Portuguese, who began a gradual process of colonisation and settlement in 1505. Gorongosa National Park

Its forests and savannahs are home to lions, leopards, Buffalos, hippos, elephants and impeccable endemic birdlife. Lake Urema and its surrounding wetlands and rivers attract scores of water birds. The multitiered Murombodzi Falls spills over jagged rocks on the slopes of Mount Gorongosa. Limestone gorges and bat-filled caves define Cheringoma Plateau.

The National Park can be accessed by directly fly from Johannesburg to Beira in (3 hours from Gorongosa) or connect through Maputo and continue on to Beira or to Chimoio (2 hours from Gorongosa). Several international cities also offer direct flights to Maputo.

July to October, during the Dry season, are the best wildlife viewing months. The bush has thinned out and animals congregate around permanent water sources. October is very hot, though, and best avoided if you don’t like the heat.
