About This Holiday

The magnificent 16-Day Great Camps of East Africa Itinerary explores the best of Kenya and Tanzania, and finishes with the choice of either the exotic island of Zanzibar OR the Mountain Gorilla Sanctuary in Uganda.

Starting in Kenya, in a group of no more than twelve guests, you fly in private aircraft between all the most memorable places in East Africa, staying at some of the very best camps and lodges. You see the vast plains of Amboseli, the beautiful Mt. Kilimanjaro and the magnificent Maasai Mara national park. Follow the wildlife migration route south into Tanzania’s famous Serengeti, and explore the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater. For a perfect finale you are transported to an tropical island idyll on the exotic spice islands of Zanzibar (Alternative finale to this itinerary: The Uganda option offers an opportunity to track the fascinating wild gorillas of Bwindi National Park in their mountain jungle habitat. Please contact AZS for Uganda details.)

The extra length of this itinerary allows guests to experience the best of East Africa and it’s extraordinary wildlife at leisure: the astonishing migration of the wildebeest (if season permits); herds of elephants and buffalo, prides of lion, the secretive leopard of the thick bush and the cheetah of the open plains, together with giraffe, Thompson’s gazelle, topi, zebra and many others.

Wildlife viewing is via comfortable Land Cruisers adapted in East African safari style, with qualified and experienced driver/guides to take guests up close for the best photographic opportunities, or on foot with an armed ranger (or Maasai warrior) to ‘be in the moment’ and experience the wild environment to the fullest.

You will meet the intriguing Maasai people in their colorful traditional dress – red shuka, beaded belt, necklace and sidearm – a decorated machete called the “Sword of a Maasai Warrior”.

In Zanzibar you’ll marvel at the opulent and evil past of the vanished sultans and their slave-markets; discover where spices come from, and relax on an island hideaway in the warm Indian Ocean, complete with coral reefs, white sand and palm trees.

Guest Accommodation

All accommodation is upmarket and varies from grand under-canvas style, to luxury game lodges and, in the cities, 5-star hotels. Camp accommodation has comfortable beds, mosquito netting, en-suite facilities with flush toilets, bathrooms with hot and cold running water and sometimes showers that are open to the sun. The spacious tented interiors boast luxury finishes such as Persian rugs and chandeliers.

Most camps and game lodges have a freshwater swimming pool in which to cool off between game drives. Dining and lounge areas feature comfortable furniture and a choice of board games and books, and there is always a well-positioned game viewing deck.

A Tempting Alternative Ending to your Holiday

Instead of Zanzibar, consider a gorilla safari! The above itinerary can be adjusted to take you to Uganda’s Bwindi National Park to observe gorilla families in the dense mountain jungle. The (5) day trip to round off your perfect safari would start on day 12, after Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater. This superb alternative will depend on the number of guests wishing to book this choice. Please contact AZS for Uganda option details.
